Temptation

Apple have a habit of making everyday things very desirable. I have a been a fan for a long time and was equally impressed with the release of the Macbook Air. If there was ever a desirable ultra portable laptop it is the embodiment of one. I have to admit it is a very tempting proposition - just on good looks alone.

Steve Jobs announced it would be available within two weeks of launch, that makes it at the end of this month. Luck would have it that I will be in San Francisco next week - and I would at least like to see one in the metal. Will I be able to resist temptation? Hard to say. Expect me to report back with my findings.

I got a good gadget fix last week when I popped into Computer Plaza and got Golden Systems to build me a very capable gaming PC. I had always wanted to get a “No Holds” bar platform and this was it. The guys at Golden Systems were great, the service was excellent and the build by Joey was outstanding. Here is the system during the build:

Notice that the Fan on the CPU is not even turning while windows is idling. I was a little worried but sure enough under-load it spins up and the overall system runs quietly considering the power. For the techies that read this blog here is the spec:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme Edition QX9650 “LGA775 Yorkfield” 3.00GHz (1333FSB)
Mobo : Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Graphics: Leadtek GeForce 8800 Ultra 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI
Memory: Samsung 4 x 1Gb DDR 2 1066Mhz
Hard Drives: 2 x Western Digital Raptor X 150GB 10000RPM SATA 16MB Cache, 1 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-S182D/RSMM 18x DVD±RW IDE Dual Layer ReWriter
Case: Gigabyte 3D Aurora Black No PSU with Window
PSU: FPS 1010 Watt PSU
Internal Media Card Reader
Windows XP Professional

I was in two minds over Nvidia or a pair of ATI 3870’s. In the end I went for the Nvidia card as the graphics drivers are at the moment more stable than the crossfire ones. Needless to say I am very happy with the rig and it is about three times faster than my previous one. Which is just as well as games suggest as Bioshock, Crysis and Unreal Tournament III need big power to run them at full detail and high resolution.

The only other thing I have my eye on is a 160GB Archos 605WiFi for viewing movies on the long plane flights I have to do. I have had a look around Dubai and the dealers I have been to only have the previous 604 model. I am sure this will not be an issue in San Francisco.

So many gadgets. So much temptation. My name is Aaron and I am a gadget-a-holic.

omg……my husband is in love with gadgets and i really dont share the same passion, but whatever! have you seen that documentary on the apple guys as well as compaq and bill gates when they were just starting out? it was interesting……big nerds… but being a nerd pays off so i am all for it.

I will be sure to look out for that documentary. If nothing but to smile at their hair cuts :D

Very nice specs you have there. I am planning to get a gaming system along similar specs. Would you mind letting me know how much you paid for your machine from Golden Systems please? Thanks :)

You have always been a gadget-a-holic!!! xx

After a life time of bit part upgrades to support my gaming addiction, early last year I opted to purchase new

The 8800 was exceptionally pricey on release but I must say that nothing I have thrown at it since has questioned its authority. Bioshock is a joy from both a story and game play front and recommend fully that you purchase yourself a 5.1 surround medusa headset to complete the feeling.

Crysis however will still noticeably punish your system at points, not through load but just lack of optimization from the designers. I felt the game to be hugely over hyped, with little to no feeling from kills, seriously buggy and very short in content. I still enjoyed the romp but then I am always disappointed when the Germans / Koreans / Russians turn into aliens / monsters (it’s just not the same).

Online PC gaming is almost impossible due to the poor connection speeds and the lack of active / quality users. If you are indeed one of the rare breed skilled in Unreal tournament 2004 or otherwise, I would be happy to take your title from you!

All the best with your new system

Hi Tyran - thanks for the kind comments.

I am really enjoying CoD4 and UTIII on the system as well as Bioshock all look marvelous at 1920×1200 with all the goodies switched on.

I have yet to give Crysis a serious go - though I have it. I have seen a lot of complaints about just how resource hungry the game is - maybe I should start dreaming about the next gen of Nvidia cards that are coming out soon.

I will have a look into some 5.1 headphones - though I currently have a Bose Companion 5 setup which is all ready enough to make me jump out of my skin whilst playing creepy games like bioshock.

I still do play WoW online wiht latency of around 600-700 it can be a little painful - but there are times when latency is 250 or so and that is much better. I imagine even at 250ms FPS must be a nightmare.

I would be happy to pay a premium to an ISP to provide with Quality of Service offering to ensure low latency as opposed to just high bandwidth.

I am a long term; 9 years + online gamer from the Unreal community, back when 3dfx voodoo was the graphics card of choice ;) I laugh when you say “goodies switched on” because at a competitive level everything is turned off and looks just like it used to back in the days of 16bit.

Little community support coupled with limited bandwidth; ensure online gaming of the “pro” nature will never take hold in the Middle East. Currently only CSS has support from a FPS (2 servers), plagued by small children, high pings and sadly but understandably aim bots.

ISDN / ADSL & GDSL will never provide the service you need for high level gaming, we can only hope they rip out the old BT system and lay down some fiber some time soon. Etisalat could provide a 100/mb service but if the only hosts are in the EU, latency will still be a factor.

For me I had to hang up my pro boots, mouse and $80 mat (lol) the moment I stepped off the plane. The frustration of 110 ping can only be compared to the frustration of finding leprosy has run away with your legs.

We should arrange the Middle East’s premier gaming LAN party event! Sadly only you and I would turn up ;)

I will leave you with some of my favorite funnies from the gaming world

I was wondering,
How much did you get that for?
